Backgrounds: The etiology of kidney cancer is not known. Nevertheless, many risk factors are discussed in the literature including nutritional ones. Design and Subjects: An international case–control study coordinated by IARC Lyon. Sample of 635 subjects, out of which 300 kidney cancer cases and 335 controls were recruited in the Olomouc and âeské Budűjovice regions. In the time period from August 1999 through January 2003 patients with newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed kidney cancer cases were selected in the range of 20 to 79 years of age. Hospital–based controls were selected according to same gender, age (± 5 years) and geographical locality as the cancer cases. Methods and Results: Standardized questionnaire was used to ascertain height, weight and nutritional
habits. The assessment of results was done by odds ratio (OR) and by logistic regression. Increased risk of kidney cancer was found in obesity (OR = 1.65), high consumption of milk (OR = 1.93) and cheese (OR = 1.94). Inverse association of kidney cancer was found in high consumption of yogurt (OR = 0.49) and poultry (OR = 0.31). Statistically significant difference was not found in high consumption of red meat and processed meat. Conclusions: Obesity, periodic consumption of milk and cheese were confirmed as risk factors for kidney cancer. High consumption of yogurt and poultry was found to have am inverse association.
