In the current version of MNK classification, the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) belong to the subgroup of Neoplasias of uncertain or unknown behavior (D37–D 48). Since the National Oncological Registry (NOR) is reporting only summarized data reflecting the whole above mentioned subgroup, it is difficult to review the validity of the NOR data concerning MDS. Nevertheless, a comparison of incidence of MDS in NOR with data obtained from the Czech MDS Registry clearly shows an insufficient reporting of MDS patients to NOR. The reason is an inaccurate subclassification of MDS in MNK classification not reflecting either FAB or WHO criteria for MDS on one hand, and a problematic classification of MDS as a neoplastic disease on the other hand. The data reported point out the current version of MNK classification as non-functional.
