Summary
Purpose: The purpose of this work was to evaluate therapeutic results in colorectal cancer patients treated at URO during the last 10 years.
Methods and Material: The testing was carried out on a total of 792 patients divided into two groups. The first group consisted of 258 patients with diagnosis of colon cancer (C18 = 258 patients). The second group consisted of 534 patients with diagnosis of rectal and rectosigmoideal cancer (C19, 20 = 534 patients). Both groups were treated at URO between 1994 – 2003. The average age in both groups was 62 (range 26 – 83).
Results: The results showed that for both groups (C18, 19, 20) the survival rate after five years reached 78.2% for patients in clinical stage I, 73.6% for patients in stage II, and 60% for patients in stage III. In group C18 the adjuvant chemotherapy had a significant influence on the survival rate as well as on the disease free interval. Such a benefit was not proved in group C 19, 20. There were 298 patients with diagnosis of rectal cancer treated by neoadjuvant chemo/radiotherapy followed by surgical intervention. According to the statistics the percent occurrence of positive downstaging was significantly higher when chemoradiotherapy was used (41.3%) compared to radiotherapy alone (24.1%). Longer survival rate was documented in patients down-staging positive compared to patients downstaging negative (p=0.02138). The benefit of adjuvant therapy after neoadjuvant treatment was not proved.
Conclusion: Our treatment results in the field of colorectal cancer are comparable to internationally published data. The results are influenced by high heterogeneity of groups and by other factors in routine practice.
