Klin Onkol 2003; 16(5): 227-230.

Summary:
Backgrounds: Improvement of methods used in the screening of breast cancer, particularly larger use of mammography followed by biopsy led to the increase of in situ stages in women in developed countries during recent decades.
Subjects and methods: All cases of female breast cancers occuring in Slovakia in the years 1980 – 1999 derived from the file of the National cancer registry were analyzed from the viewpoint of the development of the proportions of clinical stages, particularly of in situ cancers. Results: Despite gradual increase of invasive breast cancers in women during the given time period together with the increasing rates of lower clinical stages, the proportion of in situ carcinomas remained stable and low and presented only about 1,5% of the total number of all breast cancers.. Predominance of ductal and lobular as well as the share of other morphologic types did not differ from those described in other developed countries.
Conclusions: Like in other countries of Central, Eastern but also of Western Europe the proportion of in situ carcinomas of female breast cancer in Slovakia remained stable and low , indicating the need for the well organised screening of malignancies of breast using modern methods.
