Klin Onkol 2003; 16(3): 129-133.
Summary: Carcinoid is a slowly growing tumor. The main prognostic factor is primary localization, tumor size and pathology. During the period since 1984 to 2002, 24 men and 23 women were treated at the Masaryk memorial Cancer Institute. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 48 years for women (ranging from 17 to 81) and 54 years for men (ranging from 21 to 74 years). The primary localization of the tumor was stomach 3x, small intestine 7x, bronchi 10x, appendix 9x, ovarium 1x, pancreas 4x and unknown primary 10x. In 30 patients metastases were found in liver, spleen, omentum, small intestine, lung, ovarium, stone, brain , subcutaneously, breast and eye. Surgical treatment was used in 23 patients, in 18 patients different chemotherapy was indicated. Duplicity was discovered in 5 patients. Eighteen patients died, in 16 of them the dissemination of the disease occurred at the time of diagnoses. Survival ranges from 4-136 month (median 34 month), survival since the time of dissemination ranges from 4-48 month (median 21 month). With this data we would like to stress the heterogenity of the disease and not unified medical measures.
