Summary: Leukemias create/represent a heterogenous group of diseases affecting both children and adults. Diagnosis is to a large extent facilitated by flow cytometry but the relapse of the disease remains a big problem a!so at present. Detection of minima! residua! disease and finding new therapeutic strategies must be regularly based on consistent knowledge of biologica! characteristics of individua! cell types. In this point, the great significance belongs to flow cytometry with the possibilities of multicolor staining of different markers simultaneously, DNA ana!ysis, or combination of cell sorting on the basis of imrnunophenotype followed by the complete ana!ysis of individua! cell populations.
