Pain Management in Lung Cancer Patients

Summary: Pain associated with direct tumor involvement occurs in 65-85% of patients witll advanced cancer. Most patients with advanced cancer often have multiple causes and sites ofpain. Various pain syndromes can occur in lung cancer patients: chest pain, post-thoracotomy syndrome, bone pain, brachial plexus pain, liver pain and headache. Opioid-based pharmaco- therapy remains the mainstay in the treatment of cancer pain. Adjuvant drug therapy (NS AIDs, corticosteroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants) and/Dr paliative radiotherapy are often necessary. Nerve blocks have an important role in the relief of pain in 10% of patients with advanced cancer.
