SummaryChemoprevention is the use of pharmacologic or natural agents that inhibit invasive cancer by arresting or reversing the progression of premalignant cells. Advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of carcínogenesis have led to the synthesis pf new drugs thar can inhibit tumour development by selective action on specific molecular targets, such as retinoid receptors, estrogen receptor modulators, COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2), free radicals, and some others. Possible regimens for cancer prevention, based on these approaches, are reviewed.
