Abstract: The history of anticancer chemotherapy can be divided into several phases: prehistory, the era of empiricism with the realisation that the chemotherapy of cancer might be possible, discovery, evaluation and introduction of new effective drugs; the era of kinetic conception and its influence on therapeutical strategics; and the present era with new drugs, new approaches and the search for new concepts. Most of the knowledge of these developments are based upon improved understanding of the tumor biology.
