Klin Onkol 1998; 11(3): 89-93.

Summary: Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most problematic cancers in females but is exceptional in that secondary prevention is possible as an organized screening.
Design and Subjects: This descriptive study describes trends in cervical cancer mortality among women in the Czech republic and in Belgium from 1954-1989.

Methods and Results: Data are analyzed by means of the standardised mortality rate, age- and cohort-specific mortality rates and standardised cohort mortality ratios. Standardised mortality showed an overall steady decline in Belgium. In the Czech Republic, on the contrary, an increase in mortality occurred after 1981, particularly in younger age groups.

Conclusions: The results support the introduction of organized systematic screening of cervical cancer in the Czech republic, especially in younger women.
