Alteration of the p53 tumor-suppressor gene is the most common genetic defects konwn to occur in human tumors. Germline p53 mutations significantly increase the risk of developing diverse malignancies. FASAY is a simple functional assay for detecting germline and somatic mutations in the p53 gene which alter the transcriptional activity of the p53 protein. Because of its simplicity, FASAY may prove to be useful for clinical practice.
