Allogenic hematopoetic progenitor cell transplantation can be associated with a wide spectrum of complications. In this article the most common complications are described with the aim of their prophylaxis. The infectious complications, especially bacterial, viral and fungal infections and Pneumocystis carinii infection are discussed first. The second part of the article reviews the prophylaxis of graft versus host disease and hepatic veno-occlusive disease. The authors pay attention to the intravenous administration of immunoglobulins, to the therapy of mucositis and to the prophylaxis of complications developed by AB0 incompatibility between donor and recipient.
