Febrile neutropenia in oncologic patients

Patients with malignant diseases can be immunocompromised, which is manifested by an increased number of infections and often by a more complicated and longer course of disease. The first part of the report descibes peculiarities of clinical course of infections in immunocompromised patients. Fever has been shown to be the only manifestation of even a more severe infection in a leukopenic patient. The term of febrile neutropenia is discussed in more detail, the conclusion of the first section deals with a general approach to the therapy for febrile neutropenia in oncologic patients. Febrile neutropenia in an oncologic patient is a severe condition requiring a specific therapeutical approach. Immediate empiric administration of antibiotics is an essential component of the treatment. The second part of the report gives a survey of antibiotics applied for this indication. Correct evaluation of risk in a given patient and choice of appropriate antibiotics with individual considering of a number of factors discussed in details are of great importance.
