Abstract: The successful treatment of bladder cancer is dependent on early diagnostics and appropriate estimation of the extent and malignant potential an the time of primary examination of the patient. Basic diagnostic procedures are described, and the key role of the pathologist, whose diagnostic conclusions help to decide the therapeutic strategy, is defined. Tumours of the urinary bladder consist of a spectrum of tumours which is characterized by various morphologies and biological behaviour. Superficial bladder cancer, which is confined to the mucosa or which shows invasion into the lamina propria, has a tendency for local reccurrence. Muscle-invasive bladder cancer-has metastatic potential. The particular therapeutic methods, resp. their combinations are discussed.
