Summary: Cachexia is common in cancer patients and has a negative impact on response to therapy. The mechanisms of cancer cachexia include host production of factors in an atempt to defend against the tumor. The metabolic alterations associated with tumor growth are complex and nutritional repletion cannot always be accomplished with nutritional support. A fuller understanding of the metabolic conditions of cancer bearing patients is required.
