It is based on the application of a photosensitizing agent which has ability of accumulation in malignant tissues followed by local exposure with specific wavelength laser light. Energy of the laser light starts photochemical reaction and consequently are destroyed the malignant cells. This new therapeutic modality is generelly referred to as photodynamic therapy (PDT), but is also termed photochemotherapy or phototherapy.
