Klin Onkol 1992; 5(5): 131-134.

The introduction of this review deals with the definition of the main tumor markers and the author classifies them according to their structural and biochemical characteristics.

Much attention is paid to the general criteria of clinical employment of tumor markers, mainly in the screening and differential diagnostics of malignancies, in assessment of prognosis, in follow-up of efficiency of treatment, as well as in the monitoring of patients in remission.

A substantial part of the review discusses the advantages and possible drawbacks of the use of main and complementary tumor markers in different cancer sites with special reference to their role in diagnostics.
